IUCN discusses ideas about engagement with the private sector Over the past few years, IUCN has been reflecting on how it might associate the private sector with the delivery of IUCN mission in a more institutionalized way. In March 2008, on the recommendation of the Governance Task Force, IUCN Council endorsed the development and implementation of a Private Sector Knowledge Network. The primary purpose of establishing the network is to extend the IUCN platform to individuals from the private sector and to those from other parts of the society interested to engage with private sector in achieving nature conservation. This will entail developing and implementing a programme of work that is of interest to the private sector and in accord with the IUCN global programme and priorities. The first brainstorm meeting to discuss the Private Sector Knowledge Network took place on 18 July, 2008. The report of the meeting is available here.

IUCN members are invited to send comments to IUCN Private Sector Relations 2009-2012 Resolution 3.060 from the IUCN 3rd World conservation Congress in Bangkok invited the Director General to submit a detailed proposal for IUCN-private sector relations to the 4th World Conservation Congress. The Director General has implemented this resolution by integrating private sector issues in the draft IUCN Program for 2009-12 and by individual component programs identifying specific private sector activities in their respective draft programs. For convenience, we have consolidated all the private sector related activities proposed by different component programs into a single document: Private sector relations 2009-2012, and we are taking the opportunity to bring this summary to our Members’, Commissions’ and Partners’ attention and to welcome any comments and suggestions they might have. We intend putting the final document on our website taking into account any comments and suggestions received by June 25, 2008. All comments and suggestions should be addressed to Ms. Meg Gawler at: meg@artemis-services.com. The final document will be referred to in the report on progress on implementation of the resolutions which will be communicated to Members before the Barcelona Congress.

The new logo of IUCN / El nuevo logo de UICN/ Le nouveau logo de l'UICN
IUCN will be 60 years old in October 2008. We’re still full of energy, intellect and passion about the environment, but what better way to look forward to the next 60 years than with a new face., said Director General, Julia Marton - Lefèvre. Results of the First Global Survey of IUCN Members
More than 500 members from all regions made their views known on their satisfaction as a member of IUCN in the first global Survey of IUCN Members. Overall, members believe in the concept of IUCN as a Union, find IUCN relevant to their work, and respect and value many aspects of the Union. Most however want significantly greater involvement than they currently experience and many are frustrated with their efforts to become more involved. Members indicate support for the Union and the potential of a member-based organization, but it is clear from their responses that, for many, IUCN falls short of fulfilling the ‘promise’ of a member-based organization. The results of the Survey provide a compelling and rich basis for improvements to the management and governance of the Union. The Survey results will be taken up by a special Task Force of the IUCN Council and Secretariat that will develop a new Membership Strategy to be presented to the WCC in Barcelona in 2008. Download the Full Report or the Executive Summary in French or Spanish.
The new deadline for submission of membership applications has been fixed at 20 March 2009
